Learn About Employment Law

In the United States, the employer/employee relationship is meant to be voluntary for everyone involved. This generally means that the employment relationship is at-will, meaning that the employee can quit for any reason or no reason, and the employer has the same right to fire the employee. Similarly, the employer can fire the employee for any or no reason.

However, over the years, countless exceptions to the "at-will" rule have come up from state and federal laws. There are few, if any, laws which make it outright illegal to fire an employee, but there are laws which make it illegal to fire employees for certain reasons.

Also, the law governs the employment relationship in other ways, such as establishing a minimum wage and placing certain restrictions on the hours employees can be made to work.
